How to Figure Out Which Neighborhood is the Right for You

Buying a home is a life-changing event. Choosing the right size, style, and price within your budget is one thing, but deciding which neighborhood is right for you is entirely different. Even if you know what general location you want your new home to be, you should work with a reputable real estate company to consider important factors.

Crime and Safety

Choosing a neighborhood with a low crime rate should be a top priority for every family, especially those with children. You can do several things to get a better sense of how safe a neighborhood is. First, do your research and find out what the crime statistics are for that location. See if the information is listed on a city or county government website. Check social media or drive through and look for signs denoting a neighborhood watch program.

You may also be able to get crime stats from local law enforcement. If you see a resident out walking their dog or checking their mail, stop and ask questions. Do they feel safe in the neighborhood?

Proximity to Work

Avoid getting into a situation where you have a long, stressful commute to your job. Remember too, that gas prices fluctuate with global affairs and you can never be sure that they will remain low. Check more than the mileage to and from work. Take a trial run during the morning and afternoon rush hours and compare time with mileage.

Check for other transportation options. If your prospective neighborhood is in the city, is there public transportation? Are there safe bike lanes so you could perhaps cycle to work?

Quality of Schools

It’s important to research and evaluate the local public and private schools before you choose a neighborhood. Even if you don’t have children and never plan to, good to excellent-rated schools enhance the value of your property. The best indication of a well-performing school district is data from state test scores. This information is available at the website nations report card.gov.

If you do have children, call the school and find out about after-school programs. They can make a huge difference for parents who work.

Nearby Conveniences

Living in a remote area can be enticing for some people. However, if convenience is important to your family, stay away from areas only accessible by long country roads. Find out where the nearest grocery, pharmacy, and department stores are. Are they on the way home from work, school, or daycare? Keep in mind that delivery services aren’t readily available in the country.

Neighborhood Amenities

Check out the amenities for the neighborhood you have your heart set on. Well-maintained sidewalks, nearby parks, dog parks, and walking trails will help keep the family healthier and happier. If the neighborhood is lacking in places for kids and dogs to play, are these amenities available a short drive away?

Neighborhood amenities are directly related to lifestyle. If you are used to good restaurants, gyms, and libraries you may not be happy without those amenities nearby.
