Having access to electricity at all times is a given in this day and age, so when for some reason you can’t turn on your lights, it’s rightfully cause for concern. So much of our lives revolve around being able to power up or charge a device. But technology is not eternal, and as technology continues to advance, older technology becomes obsolete. This doesn’t just happen to your appliances. It can happen to the electrical system in your home too.

However, being able to tell if your electrical system needs to be replaced isn’t as easy as it is with your appliances. It’s not as simple as seeing if your refrigerator has stopped cooling your perishables. There are, however, certain signs that may indicate it’s time to upgrade your electrical system.

Constant Breaker Trips

The most obvious sign that your home’s electrical system needs to be upgraded is if your breaker is constantly tripping and shutting down your home’s electricity. There are a variety of reasons why your circuit breaker trips, including but not limited to:

  • Overloaded circuit
  • Outdated panel
  • Loose connection
  • Damaged wiring
  • Outdated appliances

The good thing about your circuit breaker tripping is that it’s doing its job. It’s stopping an electrical fire from starting in your home. The reason specific to your home’s electrical system will need to be diagnosed by an electrician, but it’s normally a sign that your system needs an upgrade.

Lights Flicker Frequently

Flickering lights are another common sign that your old electrical system is due for an upgrade. While it is perfectly normal for your lights to flicker during a particularly bad storm or while work is being done on the power lines, constant flickering without an outside explanation isn’t normal (and ghosts don’t count). Constant flickering lights is usually a sign of old wiring or a power supply that no longer supports what you need.

Outdated Electrical Panel

An outdated electrical panel may seem like something small, but it has a lifespan just like everything else in your home. A 60-amp or even 100-amp electrical panel isn’t equipped to handle the amount of electrical power you’re running in your home, assuming you have new appliances. As technology improves, your electrical system needs to improve with it, and your electrical panel is a part of that. If it’s over 25 years old, consider calling an electrician out to upgrade to a new panel.

Constant Buzzing or Crackling

Not only is a constant buzzing sound annoying, it’s also a sign that something is wrong with your electrical system. Buzzing or crackling coming from your electrical outlets are a sign that wires are loose or a connection is faulty. The electricity in your home is supposed to be silent. If it isn’t, you need to reach out to an electrician to get it fixed or even upgrade the system entirely.

High Energy Bills

There could be a variety of reasons that your energy bills are high. If you’ve been home more often or your children tend to leave lights on when they leave a room, that may be the cause, but it could also be your electrical system. Over time, your electrical system degrades, and that makes your system inefficient. If you have higher energy bills in combination with other things on this list, it’s likely time to upgrade your electrical system to something more energy efficient.
